Book Review: The Ultimate Sales Letter

The Ultimate Sales Letter, written by Dan S. Kennedy.

I read this in my continuing attempt to educate myself in “all things business”! Love it! It’s straightforward, has lots of examples from real companies and has several free perks (such as resources that usually cost around $1000!!). For obvious reasons it aims more at people who have a product to sell, but it seems as though the basic principles are transferable to those of us with services (make-up application) to sell too.

This (3rd) edition of the book was published back in 2006 but there is a newer edition on Amazon right now for £8.99 with the following blurb…

“In this new edition of his top-selling book, author Dan Kennedy explains why some sales letters work and most don’t. And he shows how to write copy that any business can use. Among other things, he provides:

  • Completely updated text and examples
  • Great headline formulas
  • New exercises to spark creativity
  • The best way to use graphics

Kennedy is the most successful, highly paid direct-response copywriter in the country. In this book, he shares his step-by-step formula so everyone can write letters that will nail the sale.”

I’m thinking that I may not need actual “sales letters” in the beginning (?) but there is so much information, even in this older edition that you could take into account when creating your website, developing some advertising strategies and perhaps when writing thankyou letters to previous clients (in hopes that they will refer you to others or use your service again themselves!). Perhaps a sales letter would be invaluable when creating resumes and sending out portfolios to potential clients ?!

A fascinating read and I think it’s definitely a resource that will end up on my shelf in the “references” section for years to come :-).

I’d be interrested to hear from anyone who’s read the new edition! Looking forward to finding out what perks and freebies he’s thrown in this one ;-).
Below I’ve included a link through to the 2006 edition and the 2011 edition in both hardcopy form (proper books!;-)) and for the kindle. It’s good to have options. :-)

New Make-up Experiences

I got a great phone call the other day asking if I could fill in for Karin (Mika’s makeup studio) on a TV show doing the make-up for the presenter. The show is called The Mix. It’s hosted by Greg Coyes and is a “half-hour magazine of outstanding musical performance and informative interviews. Each show begins with a traditional Métis performer and then branches out to explore musical kinship right across contemporary First Nations Canada”. They travel around reporting on various events and groups/performers and record the introductions in a studio.

Everything I’m doing at the moment is voluntary as I can’t earn money in a freelance capacity due to the visa I’m on, but I don’t mind as I’m building up experience and a small portfolio of projects. Plus it was a favour for Karin as she had other obligations for that morning!

Karin left me a quick fire guide as to how to do Greg’s make-up which was appreciated. I think one thing I learned was to use plenty of powder when I initially set the make-up, as I had to powder Greg quite a bit due to him being shiny. The warm lights won’t have helped. So, basically, must powder more!
