Photo Shoot for RISE

I got a phone call on Saturday from Jasmine, one of the models I worked on the the RISE fashion show. She had been asked to do a photo shoot for the RISE website but they didnt have a Make-up Artist so she called me. :-)

I had to be at work at 4pm, but I was to meet her to start her make-up (and hair) at 1pm so there was plenty of time. When I got there I had a second model too that Jasmine hadn’t know about! Luckily, I had enough time to do them both before I had to leave (I took my work uniform with me so that I could just go straight to work afterwards if need be). Everything was kept very clean and fresh with simple, youthful hairstyles. I came to the rescue with some pins when one of the models was too thin for one of the dresses, haha, and left them some bits and pieces such as lipstick in case they needed to touch up after I’d gone. I can’t image they needed to, but it’s better to be safe than sorry :-)

I would have prefered to be there for the whole shoot, but it was a last minute thing and needs must!

Looking forward to seeing the end results!

Lingerie shoot

What a lovely day yesterday was!

Firstly, it was my fifth wedding anniversary (yay us!) and secondly I had a great day down in Surrey, with Clarissa Jorquera as my wonderful “First Assist” make-up artist, doing the make-up for five lovely young ladies on the lingerie shoot for Satin Lillie Creations!

We were down there for 9am, and created individual looks for each model to suit them and the outfits they were wearing. Robyn, the designer and creator of Satin Lillie Creations, was specific about a couple of things that she really did/didn’t want for two of the models. They were easy things to accommodate (“I’d like her eyes dark, her eyes not dark”, etc) and the day seemed to go really well. Throughout the shoot all the models really needed was lip touch-ups, so once we were finished with everyone (and had checked how they were looking on camera), we were able to relax and enjoy the lovely sandwiches, fruit and coffee that Robyn had set up for everyone (so thankful for the coffee since I’d been up since 6:20am, haha!). The hair stylist Dana Demure changed each models hair styles a few times and did a great job, they all looked lovely! Dana went with a 1960′s theme of big hair and curls so we had some serious bombshells on set! :-)

Each model had five outfits each to wear and Robyn had set up a “bedroom” in her back garden using her lovely “sleigh” bed as a prop. The photographer not only used the “bedroom”, she used various areas of the garden (such as the big tree in the middle) as a backdrop. I can’t wait to see the finished results. I don’t really know anything about photography but it did look like a decent professional set-up Tara Cummings (of JuxtaPozin Arts) had going.

Out of the collection there was definitely one piece that stood out for all of us. It was a gorgeous long, white satin dress/nightgown with crystals dotted about. When the model, Aleasha, walked out of the changing area and onto the set everyone went to watch. It was beautiful! Perfect for any bride (could even be used as a classical, lightweight wedding dress!).

Robyn was kind enough to gift to me a lovely robe as an anniversary gift, and there are some pieces that I’m actually going to buy from her the next time we meet up! :-)

All in all a wonderful day. Thankyou to everyone involved!

Yukata Shoot in Lynn Canyon, Vancouver

I forgot to mention the shoot I did the other week with photographer Tia Toshizaki, model Akane Nishiya and stylist Ayaka Konno. It had a Yukata theme (a lighter, summer version of a Kimono) and Tia wanted it to be fairly dramatic with regards to the make-up. We went through some images, just to be sure we were on the same page as to just how dramatic is “dramatic”, as different peoples level of crazy is different from the next, haha ;-)

Tia drove us all up to Lynn Canyon where we thought we had limited time due to the warnings on the posts saying that they closed the gates at 6pm. We got Akane ready before we left for valley, and Tia had scouted the area a little while on a previous shoot a few days earlier, so we found a nice area and  she started shooting quite quickly. We moved on to another area, shot for a bit then changed Akane into a second Yukata for a different look then rushed back to the gates as it was very very close to closing!

As we were heading back to the gates, we noticed that there were still a lot of people, not only milling around, but actually heading into the valley. So, we decided to risk it, nip inot some trees and do a bit more shooting before we left, haha! Such dare-devils, hahaha!

It was nice to be outside for a shoot, and Tia was rather well prepared with a small sheet for us to put things on the ground while we shot! I also used a few fallen trees as tables, and some broken branches to hang my smaller bags from, haha (back to nature and all that, eh! ;-))!

After the shoot Tia mentioned that if would be around 4 weeks until she would be able to get around to looking at the images she’s taken that day as she had a very hectic time ahead of her. I said that was absolutely fine and I was expecting that kind of turn-around, so I was suprised when she sent me a couple of great images several days ago!! Way to go Tia!

Pre-shoot Meeting

A beautiful day and what do I get to do?… a three hour round trip on the the bus and skytrain for a pre-shoot meeting down in Surrey! It was worth it though, haha! :-) The meeting went well and then I got to sit out on our 23rd floor balcony for dinner ;-)

Basically what happened was that I met with the designer/maker of the lingerie that we’re shooting for (Robyn at Satin Lillie Creations)  and we went through some photos and magazine clips to see what kind of image she is thinking of for with each model (there’ 5). It’s one thing me as the Make-up Artist to think “oh I know what would look good” and another thing for us to be in agreement as to what the client was thinking and what I can advise! Robyn said she has no idea about make-up, but she still had some ideas on how dramatic she wants to go and what styles she does or doesn’t want for each of the models (sophisticated/young and innocent, etc).

It was a good meeting and I came away having seen photos of the models (five of them), the clothing that will be worn and an idea of what the designer is looking for. For the actual shoot I’ll have Clarissa Jorquera there to help. She’s nearing the end of her make-up course at Vancouver Film School and is extremely talented, so it will be lovely to have her with me for me day! (Yay for Clarissa!) :-)

Secret Garden Shoot

There’s a competition on Craigslist that has a couple of themes that you can choose from. One of them is “Secret Garden”, so I got together with Melanie Madill and came up with something. The images I’ll be sending to the competition admins are untouched but I decided to have a play around with them before putting them up on here. They’re a little cheesy, especially since I basically pressed a few buttons in Picassa, hehe ;-) Let me know what you think:
